Clogged Drains Hindering Your Work? Try these Solutions!

Are your sinks draining slowly or not at all? Are you standing ankles deep in water in the comfort of your home? It might be time to take a look at those drains you’,ve been ignoring for a while. Cleaning our drains is not something that we often think about. However, drain blockage is one of the most common plumbing problems. Drains are a vital part of our daily routine because clogged drains can hinder basic activities like bathing, brushing, cooking etc.

There’s nothing to worry about though! We have got you covered. There are many easy methods to unclog your drains all by yourself. Make sure to try these solutions before contacting a professional. However, make sure that you do not do any permanent damage to the drainage system while trying these methods.

Boiling Water

Boiled water can work wonders for drains that have a little grease build up. This method is environment friendly and is perfect for simple and small drains. Just boil a kettle of water and pour it down your drain.

Plunging

We often overlook the solids on our dishes before putting them in the sink. These solids can later on clog up your drain pipes. Sometimes, a good plunge is all you need to clear the pipes. This method also works for bathroom sinks and blocked toilets. You have to make sure that the up and down strokes are vigorous and applied with pressure.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

This is one of the most natural ways to clear out your blocked drains. Firstly, start by pouring boiling hot water down your drain and then add half a cup of baking soda. Let it sit for a few minutes. Now, pour a mixture of 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup boiling water again. Let this mixture react for 5-10 min. It’s not necessary but recommended to cover the drain during this reaction. Washing it off with boiling water once again should do the trick.

Some other household ingredients that can be used are:

Wire Hanger

A very simple but effective method is to use a wire hanger. Straighten it out as much as you can, then create a small hook at its end by bending it slightly. Push it into the drain and start fishing. Make sure to pull it instead of pushing otherwise it will just push the contents blocking the drain further inside. Once you feel you’re satisfied with the process, run hot water and it should clean everything up.

Check the U-Bend

In sink drains, most of the time the blockage is due to something being stuck in the u-bend of the pipe beneath it. It is very easy to clean. Just unscrew the bend from the pipe and clean it out thoroughly. Make sure to put a bucket under it to catch and gunk or water that falls out of it. Once the bend is clean, screw it back together with the pipe.

Wet and Dry Vacuum

You can also attempt to suck the obstruction out. Simply change the settings to ‘wet’ and seal the clogged drain with the vacuum arm extension. Turn on the vacuum cleaner and try to pull out the gunk stuck in the drain.

Biological Enzyme Cleaners

These cleaners are a very effective method for unclogging drains as they eat through the organic material. These also work well for septic systems because they do not kill beneficial bacteria. Just follow the instructions mentioned on the package and you’ll have unclogged drains all by yourself.

Caustic Soda

One should be very careful while using this as caustic soda can cause nasty chemical burns. Mix it with cold water, it will begin to heat and fizz up. Pour it down the drain and flush it off with hot water after 20-30 minutes.
